Abstrakt: The article focuses on Clement Greenberg criticism in relation to modern art. He was one of the most self-confident critics of modern art but his criticism was riddled with doubts due to errors and his definitions of the work of art that contradicts his latter criticisms. Greenberg's early criticism points to the dilemma between materiality and visuality. Moreover, modernist tendencies in his criticisms become an embodiment of "discipline" wherein his critical approach is predicated on the nature of modern disciplinarity and others.
