Over the past two decades, ultrasound technology has become integrated into the diagnostic capabilities of emergency physicians. Endorsed by the American College of Emergency Physicians and the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine, guidelines for ultrasound training, credentialing, and clinical application have been published for emergency physicians. Clinical, educational, and economic research have validated the incorporation of ultrasonography into emergency medicine. During this same period, physician assistants (PAs) have become essential practitioners of emergency medicine. Recently, emergency medicine (EM) residencies for PAs were developed that paralleled physician training programs. Though the practice requirements and thus the training requirements for EM PAs are similar to those of emergency physicians, there exists no formal training program for emergency ultrasonography for emergency medicine PAs. We developed such a program and integrated it into the requirements for our EM PA residency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
