The article discusses the humanistic approach to mental illness such as the impact of public opinions of the community-based programs. It is stated that public opinion clearly impacts the success of community-based programs for the mentally ill. To know the resident's view, telephone interviews were conducted on 418 selected adults. It questioned the basic assumptions about the nature of mental illness and treatment strategies, the level of support for community-based health service and its knowledge about the psychiatric patients. After the evaluation, the majority revealed that they were willing to have group homes for the mentally ill in residential neighborhoods. They prefer to provide strategies such as soliciting input and develop avenues for public contact with the mentally ill. |
