This study examines the nature, quantity and method of disposal of domestic and commercial solid waste in the Gobichettipalayam block of Erode district in Tamil Nadu. Based on a sample survey, the study reveals that, in urban areas, there is a large-scale generation of domestic solid waste, as compared to the rural areas. The quantum of solid waste released is directly related to the level of household income, family size and level of education. On account of poor disposal methods, health problems are more severe in urban, than in rural areas. With regard to commercial waste, it is inferred that industries release large quantities of solid waste, in comparison to other type of activities. The present modes of disposal by the hospitals, hotels and markets are not safe and satisfactory. The disposal activities of Gobi Municipality lags far behind the total quantity of wastes generated, leaving about 2,322 tonnes of garbage unattended to every year. Therefore, effective and efficient solid waste management is of paramount importance for the maintenance of health, environmental protection and natural resource management. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
