Abstrakt: This study investigated whether distressed couples differed from nondistressed couples in their perceptions of behavior exchange within their dyadic relationship and relationships with others. The Behavior Exchange Inventory (BED and Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS) were administered to 20 couples involved in treatment and 20 couples who had never received relationship therapy. Results revealed that distressed couples perceived less giving, accepting, and requesting of positive behaviors in their intimate relationships and more withholding of positive behaviors in their relationships with others. Low dyadic adjustment was best predicted by giving little positive reinforcement. High dyadic adjustment was best predicted by low withholding of positive behaviors in the dyadic relationship.
