Abstrakt: The article provides information on a study which compared habitual dreamers and habitual non-dreamers with respect to eye movements, electroencephalograms (EEG) and the recall of dreams. Results show that rapid conjugate eye movements occur during periods of electroencephalographically light sleep. Moreover, the data are consistent with the proposition that a dream is experienced during every eye movement period. The data indicate that the difference between habitual dreamers and habitual non-dreamers does not lie in the frequency of dreaming but in the ability to recall dreams. The findings support the contention of W Dement and N. Kleitman that recordings of EEG and eye movement potentials may provide objective criteria for determining when a dream is occurring.
