The article investigates the patterns of authority and affection in two family generations. It discusses the results of a longitudinal investigation of a representative sample of U.S. families, in which parents provided retrospective descriptions of their own childhood and were observed in their behavior toward their own children. It examines how parents of the earlier generation are remembered by their now-adult sons and daughters--the second generation parents. It explores the extent to which these retrospective assessments relate to the roles and behaviors adopted by these parents and how these parents actually do behave to their children. |
