Abstrakt: The article discusses German physician and running coach Ernst van Aaken. He promoted women's long-distance running throughout the 1960's even starting a marathon in Germany that allowed both sexes to run. At the 1972 Boston Marathon, a van Aaken-trained female athlete, Liane Winter, won the race at a world's record pace. He was a proponent of endurance rather than speed training. He published two books, "Brutal Medicine," and "Programmed for One Hundred." Ernst van Aaken died in 1984.
