Abstrakt: | The article discusses several issues concerning the collections of Silk Road Buddhist cave art in U.S. museums. Provenance or the history of ownership is not easy to determine. Under the Venice Charter of 1942, materials that constitute the entity of a monument can only be removed for preservation purposes. The legality of the materials removed from famous sites are covered under the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as well as the laws of the concerned countries. |
