Abstrakt: Hurricane Katrina was one of the most significant events of 2005, and one that was heavily attended to by political cartoonists. This essay examines the cartoons that emerged in the month after Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast. Analysis revealed seven specific functions these cartoons served in the aftermath of the crisis: 1) illustration and recording of the events of the crisis; 2) memorialization and mourning of heroes and victims; 3) questioning the authority of leadership; 4) critique of larger social issues; 5) reflecting of behaviors and choices before, during and after the crisis; 6) blaming and indicting of guilty persons and parties; and 7) contexualizing the crisis within world events. In this essay, these functions are further differentiated by their role in either the depiction or definition of the crisis, and characteristics of each category are outlined. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
