Abstrakt: The article provides an overview of the Irish community in Birmingham, England in 1861. The employment, patterns of residence, language and customs are described. An analysis of the association of Irish people with criminality in England as well as the reasons for their over-representation in prosecutions and in prison are provided. Lastly, the Murphy Riots and their immediate impact are described and the actions of the council, magistracy and police are also investigated.
