The article focuses on the manuscript context of "Widsid," the first poem in the "Exeter Book." This poem poses a serious challenge to the perspective previously established in the codex. The poem can simultaneously be seen to offer a weighty indication that Germanic legends and traditions continued to be valued as a matter worth preserving alongside biblical narratives, lives of saints and learned allegories of Christian living. |
