Many researchers have reported varying numbers of untestable mental patients and thus have been limited in the generalizability of their findings. The present research reports on the characteristics of untestable chronic schizophrenics. 3 subgroups based on their testing status are examined: fully testable, untestable refused, and untestable confused patients. Observational data, in terms of purely descriptive categories, regarding both their ward adjustment and social behavior were obtained for these patients over a period of 6 months. Nonparametric tests of group differences were performed revealing a pattern of significant differences indicating that the untestable confused patients are deviant from the other 2 groups in quality of communication, predictability of location, and functional nonsocial behavior.
