Abstrakt: The article discusses the claims of zoology professor Lenny Freed that the population of endangered forest bird Hawaii akepa or Loxops coccineus has declined in Hawaii. He provided this update at the 2006 Hawaii Conservation Conference which was held in July at the Honolulu Convention Center. Freed supported his assertion, citing parasites and competition for food with Japanese white-eye as reasons for what he affirmed was a dramatic decline of the bird's population. However, other bird and conservation experts disagreed with Freed's proposals due to the absence of solid evidence to support his findings.
