Abstrakt:	Chapter IX of the book "Gerontological Social Work Practice in the Community" is presented. It focuses on emotional stresses in elderly persons and notes the fact that they must go through such experiences at a stage in life when physiological reserve and opportunities for replacement, substitution and gratification are at the lowest point. A categorization of the experiences of loss into the aging process, the gradual or sudden deterioration of health, death of significant people and social and environmental losses as well as how elderly persons respond to them are explored.
