Chiral oxidative polymerization of aniline in a solid-liquid system was examined by using crystalline β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) complex (1:1) in neutral cold water containing ammonium peroxodi-sulfate (APS) as an oxidizing agent. The reaction proceeded through step-growth polymerization in the solid host molecule under air and under argon to afford two types of insulated polyanilines (PANIs) with emeraldine base (EB) and with leucoemeraldine (LE), respectively. The molecular weights (Mn) of the EB and LE PANIs determined by GPC analysis were 970000 and 480000, respectively. The XRD and TGA analyses of the oxidized β-CD complex indicated that the polymerization of aniline mostly proceeded in the host cavity. The insulation effect of the PANI (EB) complex was confirmed by the suppression of solid-gas oxidation with iodine gas. The PANI (EB) itself, when extracted from the oxidized complex, showed strong dextrorotatory and circular dichroism without β-CD as a chiral dopant, indicating that it is an optically active polymer induced by its molecular chirality without asymmetric atoms.
