The article presents a study that focuses on the need to retain secondary trade and industrial (T&I) education teachers. There are various reasons for the higher rate of secondary T&I teachers leaving the teaching profession than any other group of vocational educators. The reasons are family or personal move, retirement or sabbatical, pursue other career opportunities, better salary or benefits and dissatisfaction with teaching. T&I teachers also left the job because of the dissatisfaction with teaching. Teachers complained about lack of recognition and support to their programs. Teachers were not involved while making school policies. There is a need for a multi-level professional development program for continued growth and development of quality teachers. There should be a mentor teacher for each new teacher. |
