Etiological Study of Mental Retardation in Budapest, Hungary.

Abstrakt: The article presents an etiological study on mental retardation in Budapest, Hungary. The study was participated by 1,364 children ages 7 to 14 years. Twenty-five physicians and a number of technicians carried out the genetic, anthropological, and medical examinations in the schools. Of the sample, 1,060 attended special schools for mentally retarded children, and 304 children lived in one of the two residential training centers for moderately retarded. Approximately 50 percent were identified as pathologically retarded and the other 50 percent as familial-culturally retarded.
