Abstrakt: This article focuses on the author's experience while teaching two short stories by his pupil John Edgar Wideman at a private university in New York. The stories place English, Spanish, and Spanglish in the context of contemporary Mexican-American experiences. An element of classroom anxiety was created by the subject of language use and racial difference. In the class, three African American students felt that the explanation of African American English to a white majority is obligatory for them.
