Abstrakt: The article presents an encyclopedia entry for smelters. Smelters (or smelteries) are facilities or works where smelting takes place. Smelting is the pyrochemical process that heats ore to the molten or liquid state so that a desired metal may be separated from non-desired minerals, called gangue. Although the narrow definition of smelting entails bringing ore to the liquid state, smelting also more broadly encompasses several sequential steps by which heat is used to separate the desired metal or metals from the other elements in a given ore.
