Abstrakt: The article presents an encyclopedia entry for mining. Mining is the extraction of useful materials from surface or underground operations. Mining is distinct from other industries because the raw materials that are extracted--such as sand, gravel, stone and rock, coal, or metal-bearing ores--cannot in general be worked indefinitely because deposits are finite. Metals and other mineral resources are rarely found in a sufficiently pure state to be sold in an as-mined form. Extraction is the first operation in the commercial exploitation of a mineral resource.
