Abstrakt: The study explores the variables of stimulus complexity and position as determinants of looking behavior among retardates and normals. The results showed that, compared with normals, retarded scales scores (Ss) showed marked position preferences. Both retarded and control Ss showed preferences for viewing complex as opposed to simple checkerboard designs. The results also suggest that persistent responses to stimuli not followed by extrinsic reinforcement may contribute to high rates of competing responses in learning situations.
