Abstrakt: | The article focuses on the review on research reporting effects of various drugs and other chemical agents on the measured intelligence of mentally retarded patients. The most common compound used to improve intelligence among the retarded has been glutamic acid. There was a perception suggesting that the possibility of mental deficiency may be related to vitamin deficiency. The use of tranquilizers have been employed to calm hyper-active mentally retarded patients. Also, stimulants or energizers are more likely to be effective in improving intellectual status. Increase in intelligence were observed on mentally retarded boys who were treated with chorionic gonadotrophin. The evidence gathered from studies imply that patient treatments through the intake of chemicals do not guarantee improved intelligence. |
