The article profiles George Read, signer of the Declaration of Independence and a Delaware Official. Read represented a small state, Delaware. But he exercised a large amount of influence from the time of the American Revolution through the early years of the new nation's life. Read was a strong supporter of the Declaration of Independence, but only after it was passed by the Second Continental Congress. Even with his reservations about seeking independence, however, he was vocal in his opposition to some of Britain's actions in the colonies. George Read is perhaps not the best-known of the colonial leaders. But when the Constitution's protection for smaller states, or are reminded that Delaware was the first to ratify the Constitution, the legacy of George Read prevails. |
