The article discusses the development of an active learning approach in physical education for children in the United States. Active learning means the students are engaged with the material, skills and activities being learned. The focus is on the developmental needs, interests and backgrounds of the learners, and on learning experiences rather than teaching strategies. This approach requires students to take some ownership for learning and to assume a greater responsibility for selecting class content and activities. One way to plan a more active learning approach to teaching is to design the learning experiences around main themes, such as setting, grouping, links, prompts, demonstrations, feedback, and reflections. |
