Abstrakt: This article profiles poet Mark Strand. Strand is considered to be one of the major figures of contemporary poetry. Early on, he became known for a plain-speaking, detached voice, occasionally delving into surrealism. He has maintained a remarkable evenness of tone throughout his career. The distance in this relatively impersonal voice allows his poems to sound more public, less the production of private ego speaking to itself. His poems are concerned with spaces, mortality, and the ability of art--or lack thereof--to handle them.
