This article profiles English dramatist William Shakespeare. Shakespeare was born in Stratford-on-Avon, England on April 23, 1564. Shakespeare was a man of the late Renaissance, in the peculiar form it took in England. The parameters of his thought were set by the social expectations and turbulent controversies of his day. He was reared in the religiously conservative town of Stratford-on-Avon, where his father was a substantial citizen. A body of evidence suggest Shakespeare remained a Catholic. |
