Abstrakt: This article traces the historical origin of book illustration in the Western world. The roots of book illustration and its influences on later English literature are found in the few surviving Greek rolls from the 5th century B.C.E. illustrating scientific discourse. Around the same pre-Christian era Judaism began to produce art works to illustrate its most important texts. Constantinople, Syria and possibly Alexandria are where most early illustrated manuscripts are believed to have originated.
