Consumer-Directed Health Care Plans embody three value propositions: (a) that consumers can and will prefer to manage their own health care plans; (b) that patients involved in health care decisions will have a greater stake in using the system in a more cost-conscious fashion; and (c) that health care providers are willing to share more information with consumers, making it more available so consumers can make informed choices. However, there are concerns among consumer advocates, researchers, and others that a considerable number of consumers are likely to be incapable of making appropriate decisions, reflecting the complex nature of health care treatments. On the other hand, there are organizations that help educate consumers for the purpose of assisting them in making informed decisions. Both the public and private sectors must work together to develop and offer decision-making tools to enhance consumer confidence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
