This article presents information on primitive Hawaiian crafts. Hawaiians' most important tool was the adz, a sharp tool for cutting. Adz makers made adz blades out of a certain kind of hard rock. Hawaiians made some things out of stone. Stone is harder to carve than wood. Stoneworkers chipped some kinds of stone with adzes. They carved other kinds of stones by pecking them with other stones. Hawaiian cloth was called kapa. Hawaiians ade kapa from the inner bark of the wauke tree. No other people in the world had featherwork as beautiful as that of Hawaiians. They used the small red, yellow, black, brown, white, and sometimes green feathers from birds. They used them to make cloaks, capes, and helmets that felt like velvet. |
