Abstrakt: This article provides an insight into a volunteer's introduction into the world of litter picking and the personal reflections made. Those reflections centre around who the perpetrators are, why they drop litter and what can be done to tackle the issue. Through field observations whilst undertaking litter picks, information is gathered to try and understand the 'who' and 'why'. Canvassed opinion from interested parties suggested the blame lies with children, however, such is the extent of the problem it is difficult to pinpoint where the blame lies with litter ranging from sweet wraps to vodka bottles. Evidence, through observations of litter types at locations and the timing of the littering indicated that some children did drop litter. As a result, a short discussion was held in a rural primary school. The initial aim of the discussion was to make the young audience aware of the littering problem in their local environment. Having delivered awareness by showing them what had be discarded on the streets the hope was to empower the children to act and become anti-littering heroes. Whether one half-hour intervention made any significant change towards behaviour is very much open to debate. However, some of the children have volunteered to pick up litter (with their parent's help) so perhaps it is a start and further widespread education is needed to be the enabler to change littering behaviours.
