This article presents perspectives on the basic course in speech communication. The basic course in speech communication has been the object of several investigations because of its crucial role in undergraduate instruction, its contribution to student credit hour generation of departments, and its part as a generator of funds for other speech offerings and for graduate student support. Findings show that the vast majority of courses emphasized public speaking or a combination of public speaking, interpersonal and group communication. Departmental administrators' concerns about the direction, enrollment, and contribution of the basic course to their unit, differ somewhat from those of their teaching colleagues and their responsibilities may require additional decision making data. |
