Referent unit is foundational knowledge for rational numbers and quantity. This exploratory study examined how sixteen practicing teachers reasoned about a mathematical situation during an interview requiring the use of referent unit. Half of the teachers correctly reasoned with referent unit and a quarter made a referent unit error. This error may have been connected to a previous interview question as opposed to indicating a misunderstanding about referent unit. However, attending to details, particularly language, is important. Considerations for professional development and preservice education are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
