This article presents information related to the lesbian academic Mary Klages. She first came out, as a lesbian and as a lesbian academic, in 1976, when she was a senior in high school. Living in a conservative Republican suburb of a large Midwestern town, where feminism still meant radical bra burning, she knew that she couldn't talk to her friends, parents, teachers or guidance counselors about my newfound sexuality. She went off to her Ivy League college eager to get away from home and the Midwest in order to explore the exciting identity of lesbian more fully. |
