This article presents the results of a survey of perceived quality of PhD programs in theatre as rated by members of the Association for Communication Administration (ACA) and members of the Association for Theatre in Higher Education. The survey is based on the assumption that evaluation by peers in the profession of theatre is a valid and reliable index of quality. In the final analysis, assessments of educational quality are highly subjective. Quality is a difficult variable to operationalize, and definitions differ among researchers. No single index has been identified that can completely measure the quality of an academic program. Two different subject pools were identified and included in the survey. First, a random sample of 300 respondents was drawn from the ACA membership. This represented approximately 68% of the population of the organization at the time of the sampling. Second, a random sample of 300 members of the Association for Theatre in Higher Education was drawn from its 1987 membership. This was reduced to 296 when several addresses were incomplete. |
