Abstrakt: This article presents the results of the survey of perceived quality of PhD Programs in mass communication as rated by members of the Broadcast Education Association and members of the Association for Communication Administration (ACA). The survey is based on the assumption that evaluation by peers in the profession of mass communication is a valid and reliable index of quality. Two different subject pools were identified and included in the present study. First, a random sample of 300 respondents was drawn from the ACA membership. This represented approximately 68% of the population of the organization at the time of the sampling. Second, a random sample of 300 members of the Broadcast Education Association was drawn from the 1987 membership. This sample was reduced to 297 because three addresses were incomplete. Of the ACA sample of 300, 138 or 46% responded in some form; twenty-eight respondents or 20% of the returns evaluated at least one doctoral program in mass communication.
