Abstrakt: The article presents information concerning budgets of college theatre departments with a concentration on two major areas--annual operating budgets and supplemental sources of income. Specifically, the article addresses annual operating budgets, the percentage of budgets devoted to productions, income sources beyond those monies provided by the college or university, and average annual box office receipts. The population for this survey consisted of all programs listed in the 1987 Directory of Theatre Programs for the United States and Canada. The results of this survey suggest that the need for budgetary increases is most greatly felt in the four-year colleges. These institutions have smaller budgets than do other types of institutions. These constrictions lead to what is undoubtedly a vicious cycle. Smaller budgets affect productions, if not in quality almost certainly in quantity. This problem, in turn, affects the generation of other sources of income. When these sources of income are restricted, the department must again turn to an ever diminishing budget, and the cycle begins again.
