Abstrakt: The article presents findings of a survey on hiring practices in the communication arts and sciences at universities and colleges. Many administrators decry the current emphasis on research relative to teaching, promotion, and merit decisions. More specifically, the concern would appear to be with excessive demands, with even critics of the publish or perish syndrome acknowledging the value of some kind of requirement regarding scholarly activity. Although some faculty members make it a point to give some advice to finishing graduate students regarding the experience of seeking a job in academe, the typical new PhD probably has little or no idea about what he or she is about to face in the job market. In order to answer questions related to these issues the investigators developed three questionnaires: one for job applicants; one for job interviewers;and one for the chair of the department, a member of the search committee, or the chair of the search committee, which were distributed at the SCA Convention Placement Center in November, 1985, in Denver. The responses to one of the questions suggests the importance of the on-campus interview in this process.
