The article presents information about a survey to examine factors such as the number undergraduate and graduate students in departments, the number of full and part-time faculty member, the availability of release time for faculty, and the quantity and types of productions offered by theatre departments. The population for this survey consisted of all current members listed in the 1987-88 Directory of Theatre Programs for the U.S. and Canada. Seven hundred and fifty members were randomly selected for participation in the survey. A distinct rise in the number of undergraduate majors seems to be related to the highest degree offered by the department. On the other hand, institutions granting higher typically have larger undergraduate populations. The master's degree programs seen to act as a point of transition with the majority of respondents from Master of Arts and Master of Fine Arts programs reporting undergraduate populations greater than 25 students, but less than 100 students. |
