Abstrakt: When teams meet via computer-mediated communication to make a decision, awareness of who is present, whether other team members understand what is happening, and whether other team members agree with a decision is important to collaboration but more difficult to maintain via computer-mediated communication than face-to-face. The results of an experiment involving virtually collaborating teams is presented that examines the effects of a user interface "nudge" that indicates the presence of other team members, which team members need assistance, and whether team members agree with the team's decision. Teams with the nudge had higher perceptions of presence awareness, which in turn decreases feelings of dispensability and increases feelings that the team has reached consensus. Dispensability and consensus are linked with perceptions that the team is ready to execute their decision. Thus, a "cascade" approach to awareness via computer-mediated communication is offered and its implications are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
