The article discusses Women's Studies in the speech curriculum. In the past, the field of speech has treated Women's Studies teaching and research as semischolarly appendages which were tolerated only because some women in the field insisted on them. This is unfortunate, since many of the problems which women (and men) face are essentially communication problems which can most effectively be studied by speech scholars. The purpose of this article is to outline the goals which can be served by Women's Studies Programs in general and to suggest some specific contributions which teachers and researchers in speech can make to such programs. The most general need for Women's Studies Programs arise from the fact that the contributions, concerns, and perspectives of women as individuals and as a group have been neglected in the knowledge discovery and knowledge transmission aspects of the educational process. For example, behavioral scientists have traditionally phrased their theory and research almost exclusively in terms of male perspectives and male orientations toward systems of individual and social action. |
