Characterizations of ‘scientific mathematics’, ‘school mathematics’ and ‘informal mathematics’ are discussed in this paper considering three levels of analysis: 1) a general level, taking into account ‘macro’ variables as the cultural and the social ones; 2) an intermediate level oriented to identify ‘habitus’ in communities in which mathematic activities are practiced and 3) the last level of analysis within which we intend to explore from a constructivism framework, the influences that these general conditions perform in the personal building of knowledge.
