This paper reports on a pilot study designed to find out the impact, if any, of some selected research studies and reform texts on student teachers’ conceptions about classroom assessment in general, and about the role and value of written tests in the assessment of student learning in particular. The student teaching experience of mathematics teacher education programs provides an excellent opportunity to study prospective teachers’ conceptions about these issues because they face numerous challenges and tensions while changing from being a student to being a teacher.
