This article provides a personal account of a fighter pilot's experiences during World War II. The pilot initially had reservations about flying the P-47 Thunderbolt due to its size but grew to appreciate its reliability and firepower. The pilot flew with the 61st Fighter Squadron of the 56th Fighter Group and learned from experienced leaders, including Bob Johnson. The article highlights a mission where the pilot and his squadron successfully outsmarted the Luftwaffe using a tactic called the "Zemke Fan." The pilot recounts engaging in combat, shooting down enemy aircraft, and admiring Col. Hub Zemke. Another pilot, Captain Robert "Shorty" Rankin, shares his experiences engaging in dogfights with German aircraft, shooting down five Bf 109s, and narrowly escaping enemy fire. His wingman, Cleon, also successfully shot down a 109 in a head-on encounter. Rankin and Cleon returned to their base in England and were celebrated for their successful mission. The article also provides information about the P-47 Thunderbolt aircraft used by Rankin and his squadron. [Extracted from the article] |
