Taking Talk Seriously: Large-Scale Methodologies.

Abstrakt: The article discusses the challenges faced by scholars studying "talk" in the nineteenth century due to the lack of direct sources. The author argues for the use of large-scale methodologies that require collaboration, funding, and rigorous review. The article also mentions the Odeuropa consortium, which is capturing evidence of odors in historical texts. The author shares their own experience of using a small private database to study the role of talk in a well-documented academic project. They propose the use of digital methods, such as the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI), to analyze texts and identify reported speech.
