Abstrakt: Background: Absenteeism increases the risk of dropping out of nursing education. It is therefore relevant to examine the phenomenon of absence. Purpose: To clarify the extent of absenteeism and explore what nursing students consider to be the reasons for it. In addition, to gain an understanding of what motivates attendance during theoretical teaching and to highlight the importance of community. Design/method: The study uses a mixed-methods approach. Experience was obtained via a questionnaire with 161 responses, as well as eight interviews with nursing students. Data is generated from one nursing education program. Results: 65% of the nursing students had been absent within the last three months for an average of 5.2 days. The reasons for this were lack of motivation, personal challenges, and boredom with the teaching. Three main themes had an impact on the motivation for attendance: personal competences, the community, and teaching. Conclusion: Self-efficacy should be strengthening, by focusing on the community and inspiring teaching, as this creates motivation and thus reduces absenteeism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
