The article discusses the play "The Years" and the contrasting reactions between audience members and critics. While audience members experienced fainting and vomiting during the performances, critics did not have the same emotional response. The author questions whether critics' detachment and note-taking during the play create a barrier that dulls their capacity for empathy. The article also addresses the misconception that only men were affected by the graphic content of the play, emphasizing that both male and female audience members experienced distress. The author concludes by suggesting that critics should reflect on their missed experience and consider whether their detachment has made their perception of the play less authentic.
