Abstrakt: The article examines fictional works by the Macanese writer and journalist Deolinda da Conceição (1914-1957) and explores insights offered by interliterary approaches in order to set Conceição's stories in the context of the Chinese May Fourth 1919 realist literary tradition, of the New Culture Movement of the 1910s and 1920s, and of the Sino-Japanese war (1937-1945). A counterpoint is found in relevant works by Xiao Hong (1911-1942). The article stresses complex intersectional aspects of interaction between Chinese, Macanese, and Portuguese characters, as well as clashing and intersecting cultures. The article argues that while Conceição's work might somewhat stereotype the Chinese "Other", it is necessary to comprehend the related transnational and intersectional writing perspectives. Conceição's fiction lends itself to interpretation in the light of co-eval literary output, and thus ought to be approached in sensitive interliterary terms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
