The study addresses challenges in dry stacking of fine-grained materials by blending itabirite iron ore slime tailings with coarser flotation tailings. It focuses on flow dynamics, capillary saturation, and the necessity to prevent large, saturated volumes. Geotechnical tests were conducted on various blends, deriving unsaturated hydraulic conductivity functions using Fredlund and Xing's methodology. The Soil-Water Retention Curve data, combined with transient 1D analysis, assesses capillary rise. Results show capillary rise up to 50 meters with over 80% saturation, and also influenced by weather conditions penetrating up to 20 meters. Integrating up to 30% slime content in flotation tailings mitigates saturation issues. Empirical and numerical findings enable inferring saturation tendencies in distinct iron ore tailings mixtures, establishing a procedural framework for practical field applications.
