Endodontically treated tooth with insufficient coronal structure requires post placement to retain the coronal restoration, however, post space preparation increases the risk of root fracture. To investigate the prevalence of teeth with post restorations in the United Arab Emirates. Patients’ records and oral radiographs previously taken for diagnostic and treatment purposes were screened for teeth with post restorations. The collected data included age, gender, nationality, date of radiograph, total number of teeth, number of teeth restored with post, type and location of teeth restored with post, and number of posts. The data was tabulated using the statistical program for social sciences (SPSS version 23, IBM, USA). An expert statistician performed the statistical analysis. The overall prevalence of patients with post restorations was 18.43%, with no statistically significant difference between males and females (P>0.05). Among the total post restorations, 199 (59.40%) were in the maxillary arch and 136 (40.60%) were in the mandibular arch. The commonly restored teeth with post were maxillary premolars and mandibular molars. The radiographic screening revealed that one patient had 15 post restorations, and another had 19 post restorations. The current study clearly demonstrated the overuse of posts for the coronal restorations in the study population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
